I did not understand this verse when I first read it. It seemed kind of cruel of God to stop them from eating from the tree of life. But now I think I get it.

If they would have ate from the tree of life in their fallen state they would have lived forever in that state. God did not want that and already had a plan to redeem humanity.

So it was an act of mercy and love.
